Extremo Norte surge de la experiencia de la artista, entre los años 2008 y 2011, en la zona fronteriza México/Estados Unidos, primero como turista y después como residente al vivir cerca de un año en la ciudad de Monterrey. La propuesta se centra en indagar sobre la identidad híbrida que caracteriza a esta franja divisora y a la vez conectora entre sur y norte; específicamente entre estados del noreste de México y Texas. A este respecto, comenta el curador mexicano Marco Granados: “Adarve retrata, literalmente, esa suerte de condición que vivimos quienes habitamos el norte de México, estigmatizados de manera permanente y jugando siempre la doble condición de ver hacia el norte pero sujetos al sur.” Son dos los aspectos que definen la particularidad de esta zona; por una parte, se encuentran las extremas condiciones geográficas, con paisajes tan magníficos como inhóspitos, y por otra parte, las dinámicas –visibles e invisibles– de tránsito e intercambio. Por su permeabilidad e indefinición este territorio funciona como un limbo en donde la permanencia resulta un absurdo. Desde un punto de vista histórico, Granados menciona: ” (…) desde épocas prehispánicas a esta parte geográfica ni siquiera se le asumía como Mesoamérica sino como Aridoamérica, una región habitada por “perros sin correa”, es decir, por bárbaros”. Aún hoy, el extremo norte del sur y el extremo sur del norte representan el confín de dos mundos, el lugar último, el final, la nada; sabiendo que la nada no es más que un espejismo.
La muestra presenta un cuerpo de trabajo constituido principalmente por fotografía y video. En cuanto a la fotografía, la artista propone esta vez dos aproximaciones. La primera, representada por la serie Carga, corresponde a imágenes minuciosamente construidas por medio del uso de herramientas digitales. Debido a su formación como artista plástica, Adarve se ha visto fuertemente influenciada por lógicas propias a medios como el dibujo, la pintura o el collage. Por esta razón, su punto de partida, más que la toma única, corresponde a cientos de fragmentos que luego son utilizados para producir la ilusión de un instante. A diferencia de la anterior, la segunda aproximación consiste en un conjunto de fotografías más relacionadas al género documental y que cumplen la función de ampliar el contexto y por ende las posibilidades de lectura. De esta forma, Extremo Norte reúne obras cuyos procesos creativos están basados tanto en una estricta premeditación y control, como también en el accidente y el azar.

Northernmost is based on the artist’s experience on the Mexico-United States border from 2008 to 2011, first as a tourist, and then as a one-year resident in Monterrey. Her proposal enquires about the hybrid identity of this frontier ¬–specifically between the states of Northeastern Mexico and Texas– which simultaneously separates and connects the south and the north. In the words of Mexican curator Marco Granados: “Adarve is able to literally represent the conditions of those of us living in Northern Mexico, permanently stigmatized and always having to look north while being restrained to the south”. Two aspects define the particularities of this area: on the one hand, we have the extreme geographic conditions, from magnificent to inhospitable; while on the other, we have the visible and invisible dynamics of transit and exchange. Due to its permeability and lack of definition, this territory operates as a limbo, in which permanence becomes an absurdity. From a historical point of view, Granados notes: “(…) even in Pre-Hispanic times, this geographic region was not considered a part of ‘Mesoamérica’; it was known as ‘Aridoamérica’, a region populated by ‘unleashed dogs’, that is to say, by barbarians”. To this day, the northern end of the south and the southern end of the north represent the edge of two worlds, the ultimate place, the end, nothingness; on the understanding that nothingness is just an illusion.
The exhibit presents a body of work composed of photography and video. Regarding photography, the artist offers two approaches. The first one, represented by the Carga series, consists of images carefully constructed by means of digital tools. Influenced by her training in Fine Arts, Adarve appropriates the logic of disciplines such as drawing, painting and collage. For this reason, instead of a single snapshot, her starting point consists of hundreds of fragments that are then used to produce the illusion of an instant. Unlike the former, the second approach involves a set of photographs closely related to the documentary genre, broadening the context as well as the possibilities of interpretation. As a result, Northernmost gathers a set of works whose creative processes are based, not only on strict premeditation and control, but also on serendipity.
